Recruiting Recap 9/20: Eric James, Ryan Luther, Rawle Alkins

The fall recruiting picture has begun to shape up with the most serious targets emerging and visiting campus. We’re entering the part of calender where receiving a verbal should not surprise us. Isaiah Watkins committed at the end of the September last year and around the country, lots of player have made their choices earlier than normal.

Eric James will visit Duquesne this weekend according to Corey Evans and he could fit nicely for the Dukes.  I’ve seen him reported anywhere from 6-3  to 6-5, but he’s generally  listed as a two rather than a three giving him good size for the position.  James presents as a strong enough ball handler that he could allow Jim Ferry to play his preferred two wing set up rather than two point guards. A three star on Scout, James’ recruitment has stayed relatively low key. You hope to catch a player like James early because his stock could rise if he holds out till the spring. He has offers from most of the strong MAC programs including Kent St, Ohio and the new Hurley madness known as Buffalo. He looks like an ideal target as he’s fairly local (greater Columbus) with some good offers but none from the Atlantic 10 or better.

Evans also reports that Ryan Luther is off to Dayton this weekend. Archie Miller has long coveted the taller Luther and he offered him before any other coach. Based on reports, Ferry has pursued Ryan very aggressively, but so has Miller. I could see him picking either school, but I could fathom him going in a different direction especially with Ryan picking up an offer from Pitt.

Given that Ryan has three Atlantic 10 offers and his brother Collin has two, the Luther’s could find themselves on opposing teams in the conference. We could have brothers on each side of the city game too. That would make for some interesting story lines. We don’t know if Collin will take more visits and he might decide between Duquesne and George Washington.

Jumping ahead to 2016, Duquesne coaches watched high profile Christ the King sophomore Rawle Alkins.

Rivals rates him as a 4 star and the 19th best player so far in his recruiting class. They report offers from Seton Hall, Villanova Fordham, who nabbed Alkins’ former teammate Jon Severe already.
