The football team didn’t win this past weekend, and there were many reasons why – but it wasn’t for lack of good quarterback play.
Dillon Buechel was 21-38 for 362 yards and a touchdown. This performance was just three yards shy of the single-game record for a freshman quarterback, and also tied him for the freshmen record for 300-yard games, which had been previously held by Neil Loebig. This performance puts him as our consensus Duke of the Week.
Not to play the what-if game, but his numbers would be even better during the YSU game – and that passing record would be his – if it weren’t for some on-target balls that bounced off of the hands of receivers.
The Dukes were behind and the running game was a non-starter so throwing was the obvious play, yet interceptions were not a factor (from Buechel, anyway). The offensive line has been having some blocking issues, yet poise was not an issue. Buechel continues to show that the coaching staff made the right decision in starting him over the more experienced Marty Mitchell.
The NEC also recognized Buechel’s performance this week by giving him his second nod as Rookie of the Week this year. His current stat line – 966 yards, 5 TDs, 1 INT – puts him on pace to have a great year. He should be able to further pad those numbers in two weeks against what will be an inferior West Liberty team. Rookie of the Year watch is on at Duquesne – this should be some fun!
Congrats to our Duke of the Week, Dillon Buechel!
