It was Duquesne Media Day for both the men’s and women’s basketball programs today and a special guest stopped by for the men’s practice.
Dan Burt and the women kicked off the event. Burt had some very nice things to about his top returning players
Following Burt, men’s coach Jim Ferry addressed the media with his normal candor.
Ferry didn’t have any new information to provide on the status of Micah Mason or Jordan Robinson. He also reported that Isaiah Watkins and Tra’vaughn White haven’t practiced in the last week. We knew about Watkins injury but the White news just piles on a little bit more. Hopefully, he’ll returned to practice tonight (foreshadowing).* He left room for speculation in the final week before the open exhibition by declaring that he hasn’t set his starting lineup. He pointed to Jeremiah Jones, Derrick Colter and Ovie Soko as locks to play a big role, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he left out Dominique McKoy and Tra’vaughn White to keep the fire lit. I honestly can’t see anyone but those two getting extensive playing time until the eligibility questions clear up.
There was plenty about Soko today including a featured article from Stephen Nesbitt earlier.
We already knew this but the 2013-14 team is Ovie Soko’s even if he only retains one year of eligibility. He looks like the face of the program and its star. I fully expect him to run wild especially against weaker competition early but he needs to stay consistent to take his game to the next level once the A-10 season hits.
If media day wasn’t enough of an info drop for you, Jon Rothstein made his way to the Bluff to watch an evening practice. Here are his observations:
Given his kind words about Tra’vaughn White, I assume he has recovered from the high ankle sprain reported earlier this afternoon and practiced. *
While Jim Ferry wouldn’t do more than hint at his starting lineup, Rothstein went with a bit of a twist.
His lineup changed from the middle of the summer where he had Jordan Robinson at the 5. He included Jerry Jones in his previous guess and despite the evidence to the contrary, he kept him there in his latest projection. In my opinion, the only way Jerry starts is if Ferry decides to go with him over White.
* UPDATE: Per Nesbitt’s blog entry, White had a boot on so unless he was visited by some kind of faith healer, he probably didn’t practice tonight. Also note that only 6 players were available for secret scrimmage meaning something must be up with some other players as well. Depth has suddenly become a major concern.
