For the first time ever in the Mattamy Athletic Center, a women’s basketball team scored 100 points. Unfortunately for Dukes fans, it was the Notre Dame Fighting Irish against the Dukes. The Irish were dominant today, cruising to a 100-61 victory in a game that Notre Dame could have practically picked their score but let up on Duquesne. The game was over from the start, with the Irish jumping out to a 14-2 lead in the first five minutes and never looked back. The Notre Dame women improve to 6-0 and look ready to compete for their fourth straight Final Four appearance. The only star of the game for the Dukes was Wumi Agunbiade. On her return trip to Ontario, Wumi excelled this afternoon, scoring 23 and 7 in a great game. She could have easily fit in with the Notre Dame players, and she wasn’t scoring just because someone on the Dukes had to score. Unfortunately, she was the only one that played well today for the Dukes before the eventual rout finally ended. It was a return home trip for three other Dukes as well in Jose-Ann Johnson, Oditte Odisho, and Brianna Thomas.
The loss drops the Dukes to 5-3. The rest of December will tell whether the Dukes have a shot at an at-large bid. The Dukes will likely need to sweep the five games in December to get a bid, and it won’t be easy as the schedule features 3 Big East/BCS teams, though all three in Providence, West Virginia, and Pitt are beatable. The next game is home to Providence on Thursday evening. Hope to see you there.
