This week’s Duke of the Week had a few good candidates. There were four swimmers for the Duquesne Dukes women’s swimming team that qualified for Winter Nationals. Soko played well against Pitt, scoring 17 points.
Tacquaya Tobias from the indoor track team won the 60m dash, was 2nd in the long jump, 5th in the 200, and was on the 4×4 winning relay in the indoor track meet at Youngstown State. And, even though it wasn’t this week as the women’s volleyball team won the A-10 tournament last week, Coach Steve Opperman got consideration for his work in getting Duquesne into the NCAA Tournament where they will play at Kentucky. However, the staff at We Wear the Ring selected Orsi Szecsi above the others for her triple-double in the Dukes 83-35 road victory at Morehead State. Orsi netted 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 dimes to complete her triple-double. The 10 assists were a career high. With the triple-double, Szecsi became the second Duke ever to record a triple-double, with the other being Korie Hlede against Cleveland State in 1994 (29 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists). It wasn’t just the triple-double that helped Szecsi stand out in the game though. Her on the ball defense, something that doesn’t show in the stat sheet, was also excellent and a part of holding Morehead State to 24% from the field.
Orsi is among elite company as one of only four players to record a triple-double this season in NCAA Division 1 women’s basketball. The other three players are Stefanie Dolson of UConn, Amanda Zahui B. of Minnesota and Tiasha Gray of Austin Peay.
