Penn St vs Duquesne 68-59

Looking at the box score of this one, I really can’t believe Duquesne lost and by 9 points no less. 21 offensive rebounds, created more shots than Penn St, generated more turnovers, and got to the free throw line 24 more times while holding Penn St to 68 points and DJ Newbill and Tim Frazier to 25 points combined. Of course, when you shoot a season worst 27% from the floor including 17% from three….

The Good

Defense. Easily their best, most complete defensive game. I don’t think they really broke down for an extended period of time and Penn St made some nice plays to get the baskets they did. Ferry said the Dukes defended the Nittany Lions better than anyone this year in his post game and I believe him.

The Bad

Shooting. No way around it. The Dukes just couldn’t buy a basket. They created as many great shooting opportunities as Penn St did. They didn’t cash in. Anything that was remotely contested felt like it didn’t have a chance.

The Ugly

Ovie Soko’s last two fouls. I get that you’re an intense dude and intense player but both of those fouls are inexcusable for a 5th year senior even if they don’t have any fouls at all.

The Moment I Knew It Was Over

Penn St’s 15 to 1 run ending around the 5 minute mark. Dukes were buried though they did a nice job fighting out of the hole to save face at the end.

Play of the Game

There were a number of key plays but the only one with any flash was Dominique McKoy’s steal and slam in garbage time.

Credit Where It’s Due

Penn St made their shots, many of them contested. Duquesne didn’t.

Player of the Game

Donovon Jack. Not active on offense but his defense has really come around. He almost neutralized Duquesne’s guards tonight single-handed. 9 points, 12 rebounds and 6 blocks.

Parting Thoughts

It’s easy to smash this team and call every player terrible tonight. Yes the offense sucked today and yes it was a lot of the Dukes own doing. Still, I don’t think we’re going to see another offensive output this bad again this season. If the Dukes shoot to their season averages tonight (and they had plenty of opportunities to do so) suddenly Duquesne wins and in convincing fashion.

Of course, the excellent defensive effort was as much an outlier as the poor shooting was. However, that’s three decent to good efforts out of the last four game.
