The Duquesne Dukes women’s basketball team hosts VCU tonight at 7:00 PM. VCU enters at 13-1 (1-0 in the Atlantic 10), but nobody, even probably VCU’s team, know how good they are or are not. VCU’s only loss came at current RPI #20 (the) Ohio State by 12, but VCU has yet to beat an RPI top 125 team either. The scheduling was likely intentional, as VCU had a top 40 recruiting class in the country incoming. It made sense to give them a lot of easy wins with only one hard road test. It is nice to get VCU early in the schedule before too many of the youngsters have a chance to play together.
If past games are an indication, VCU will go 2-3 zone against the Dukes and dare the Dukes to beat them from three. It is a gambling 2-3 zone and perhaps the most gambling I’ve ever seen a 2-3 zone from a women’s team. If the Dukes take care of the ball and make enough threes to keep the 2-3 zone extended fully, the game will likely be theirs.
VCU is led by six-foot senior swing Robin Parks. Parks is averaging a whopping 23.1 points and 9.7 boards per game. VCU will start a very guard-oriented offense that is much different from the Dukes previous game against the Bonnies. Isis Thorpe (5-8 frosh guard and second leading scorer), Kiera Robinson (another 5-8 freshman guard), and Zakia Williams (5-7 guard) all start for the Rams in addition to Robin Parks. The lone remaining starter is Camille Calhoun, and expect Jessica Pellechio off the bench at guard to play a leading role for VCU.
Hope you come out and cheer on your Dukes tonight at 7:00 PM in the AJ Palumbo Center.
