Duquesne was outplayed in almost every facet of the game losing to Richmond 75-58, their fourth straight. The Dukes spotted the Spiders an early eleven point lead and only flirted with making it a game. They truly never got back into it.
Micah Mason and Ovie Soko. I don’t really want to say anything nice tonight, but Soko and Mason did their jobs tonight. They need support though or the Dukes won’t win again this year.
The opening five minutes. Remember when this was a first half team? For the fifth game in the row, the Dukes started poorly but they never even feigned a comeback today.
Jim Ferry’s response. I don’t get pissed off often about this team anymore, but I was pissed that Ferry wasn’t pissed in the post game. He gave a lot of credit to Richmond and truly they deserve credit, but there wasn’t a hint of anger.
Play of the Game
A first half Kendall Anthony three. Dukes cut the Richmond lead to seven. Anthony ran Derrick Colter around the floor and Colter actually did a good job keeping up. Anthony got a split second of separation and it was enough to catch and shoot without getting his feet set. It was a David Gonzalves moment.
Player of the Game.
Stay with Kendall. If Richmond manages to keep themselves in the conversation for the NCAA tournament when the A-10 championship begins, Anthony has my vote for conference player of the year. In a field where no one has distinguished themselves, holding this team together through this kind of adversity would do the trick.
Moment I Knew It Was Over
I could probably say the first half but I’ll go with 13:40 left in the second, the Dukes forced turnovers on three of four possessions with two made free throws by Terry Allen mixed in. Duquesne proceeded to miss three layups and a wide open three pointer. They came out of that stretch with zero points and Richmond proceeded to take control.
Credit Where It’s Due
I like this Richmond team. I like Anthony. I like Allen and I especially like Chris Mooney. They came out and kicked the Dukes in the groin rattling them. They played a very smart game. As much as the Dukes made the Dukes look bad at times, Richmond made the Dukes look bad too. It was just so damn subtle.
I really don’t want to talk much more about this one and I have Season 1 Disk 4 of Game of Thrones waiting for me courtesy of Netflix. The Dukes are collapsing in February. I’ve seen this episode before.
