Duquesne at St Louis 71-64

The Dukes defeated a top 10 opponent on the road for the first time in 52 years as they handed St Louis their first Atlantic 10 loss and only their third on the season. The Dukes trailed by as many as seven midway through the second before back to back three’s from Micah Mason and Jerry Jones cut the lead to one. It was all Duquesne after that point as they put it away 71-64.

The Good

The coaching. Great game plan by the staff to limit both Jordair Jett and Dwayne Evans. Holding two all conference players under twenty – five is outstanding. Thought they did a great job putting the ball in Micah Mason’s hands in the second as well.

The Better

Ball movement. Dukes had 19 assists to 12 turnovers. The next closest opponent recorded 17. That was also Duquesne.

The Best

The Defense. The issue for Duquesne all year has been their defense and it has finally come together. St Louis are not an offensive oriented team, but the Dukes’ effort, decision making and positioning are light years better than in November.

Play of the Game

4 point possession.  Dominique McKoy went 1 of 2 from the free throw line missing the second. The basketball bounced around before Jeremiah Jones secured it and found Mason for a wide open three.

Honorable Mention. Mason’s shot clock expiring bomb. Turning point in the game.

Player (s) of the Game.

Micah Mason and Jerry Jones. The most efficient player in the country got it done from the floor and from the free throw line. Jerry Jones  helped close this one out and played great defense.

Moment I Knew It Was Over

The Jerry Jones transition stuff. St Louis elected to find a way not to foul Mason and the Dukes were able to break the press and find the easy slam.

Credit Where It’s Due

St Louis is a great team. Maybe the best in the Atlantic 10 in five or six years, but they just seem to struggle against Duquesne. They made a living playing with fire but they finally got burnt.

Parting Thoughts

It’s strange to say it, but the Dukes really should have swept the season series. They’re one of three teams to break down the St Louis defense and they did it twice. One of the other team is number two in the nation. That’s about the only negative thing I can say tonight. It was a great team win and an outstanding win for the players and program. They can build around this.
